Stepanakert (former Armenian name Vararakn) is located north of Shushi, on the right bank of the Karkar River. It is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Artsakh. Stepanakert was part of the medieval Armenian melikdom of Khachen and Greater Armenia (4th century B.C).
